Once every two months, we’ll list a new contest on the website.  The contest for January and February will be to name this horse:

One of the subplots in my new novel involves a neglected horse.  In my manuscript, I named the horse “Riskie Business,” but I’m not sure I like that name.  To win a free book of your choice selected from: Quality Concealed, Image of Deception, Challenge of Choice, or A Tuff-to-Beat Christmas, you need to name this horse.  I’ll decide the name I like best and reward the winner with a free book.  If I really like the name, I might decide to use it instead of “Riskie Business” in the published novel.

"In one of the stalls Stephanie noticed a new sorrel horse.  At least she thought it was a horse.  It could have been a hatrack with skin stretched over it.  The mare stood with her head drooped in the corner of the stall, her long mane and tail tangled in dreadlocks.  Bite marks scarred her dull coat, and a swelled belly sagged below protruding hipbones and ribs.

 …

“'You give her a name then.'

“'Okay.'  Stephanie leaned back to take in the full view of the skinny horse.  Kathleen was all business when it came to horses.  Durrell had thought the colt might be worth Kathleen’s time.  Saving the mare to raise an unborn colt could be costly and risky.  'How about Risky Business?  We can call her ‘Risky,’ or ‘Riskie,’ spelled with an ‘ie’ because she’s a girl.' "

This is a picture of Dotty, a mare that, for a time, hung out at the same stable as my horses.  She wasn’t abused, just old and out-of-shape from having so many colts.  I did look at this picture, however, when I described the mare in my story.
